Watch Wild Sideshow Stunts Calif. Police Chief Calls 'Street Terrorism'

A newly passed ordinance will allow Vallejo police to crack down on spectators who attend sideshow events at city intersections that can involve illegal and dangerous vehicle displays.

A California police department will begin cracking down on vehicle sideshows at intersections after the chief called the events "street terrorism."

The Vallejo City Council unanimously passed an ordinance this week to cite and fine spectators at these traffic activities, which can attract hundreds of people who turn out to watch dangerous stunts performed on city streets, KTVU-TV reports. Spectators are now prohibited at these events and could face fines of up to $1,000.

"They are spinning donuts, disrupting our citizens, throwing fireworks at our officers, throwing bottles, it's been a problem," said Vallejo Police Capt. Jason Potts, who attended Tuesday's council meeting with Chief Shawny Williams when the measure was approved.

"This truly is about saving lives and improving the quality of life for people in Vallejo."

The sideshow trend has been a problem around California's Bay Area. In fact, Vallejo officials looked to San Jose, Los Angeles and other communities for guidance in crafting their ordinance.

"If you re there and you're encouraging folks and blocking the roadway and preventing our officers from taking action, then we're going to take action against you as a spectator," Potts said.
